The Catawba Valley Famers Market is looking for a new Market Manager!

Famers Market Manager

Provide management and operational support for the Catawba Valley Farmers Market, which occurs weekly from May – October at the Catawba Community Center in Catawba, VA. The market manager will serve as the main contact for vendors of the farmers market, develop weekly promotions, offer customer and vendor support, and coordinate promotional events at the market.

The Catawba Valley Farmers Market is a service offered through VT EarthWorks, the Virginia Tech Catawba Sustainability Center’s agriculture business incubation program. The market manager will report to the director of the Catawba Sustainability Center.

Required Qualifications

· Ability to direct and manage others

· Knowledge of marketing/advertising

· Good organizational skills, including record keeping

· Ability to work independently and be self-directed

· Good communication skills

· Ability to negotiate and facilitate interpersonal relationships

· Able to use email and social networking for advertising and communication

Preferred Qualifications

· Previous experience managing a famers market

· Agricultural background

· Experience developing advertising/promotional materials

Description of job responsibilities:

50% Operational support:

· Oversee and assist set up, break down of vendor tents

· Provide quality control for products sold at market

· Serve as the point-of-contact and build positive relations with customers

· Maintain communication with Catawba Sustainability Center director and the Market Steering Team

· Participate in periodic vendor meetings and steering team meetings

20% Supervisory support:

· Be the point-of-contact with potential new and existing vendors

· Ensure vendors are in compliance with market policies

· Collect market dues

· Participate in the Blue Ridge Farmers Market Coalition meeting

· Provide reports to director of Catawba Sustainability Center and the Market Steering Team

30% Marketing/Advertising support:

· Develop a weekly newsletter and distribute via email

· Organize events

· Develop and distribute promotional materials

· Set up roadside signs each week

· Use email and social networking tools to promote the market

· Maintain a log of customers and their email contacts

Start date & compensation:

The market manager will be expected to work 10-15 hours per week from mid-April – October. This includes every market day on Thursdays from May- October from 2-8 pm.
